Marbled White or Melanargia galathea

I found this female Marbled White settling down for the evenng on some Dropwort. It was very windy, I often wonder why butterflies roost at the top of tall plants and not at the bottom of grasses, they can’t get seasick I suppose..

Black Hairstreak or Satyrium pruni
Black Hairstreak or Satyrium pruni

Here it is drinking from Privet flowers. Often the “tails” on the wing are missing after a butterfly has had a near miss with a hungry bird. This individual still has that pleasure.

Heath Fritillary or Melitaea athalia
Heath Fritillary or Melitaea athalia

It took a while to find this, walking a mile or two through woodland in Kent. When we found a patch of wood of just the right age and height, there were clouds of them. Wonderful.

Homoeosoma sinuella
Homoeosoma sinuella

I found this only by the fact that I saw it land on this grass. Homoeosoma sinuella provides a wonderful imitation of a grass seed.

Camoflage, Green Brindled Crescent

I’ve always liked this moth ever since I pondered over its ID for ages. I’ve always thought the patchy metallic green sheen on the wings were worn down but after seeing it on this branch it blends in exactly with the algae.

A bramble leaf with leaf mines
A bramble leaf with leaf mines

I found a bramble leaf in the garden with these two vacated mines of a micro moth Stigmella aurella though it looks more like a much rarer moth that doesn’t occur around here. The adult moth is 2mm across

Ringlet butterfly

I went out to photograph a plant and came back with a butterfly photo. I saw a few of these asleep and covered in dew and I couldn't resist. Besides, the plant hadn't started flowering.

Red-girdled Mining Bee, Andrena labiata

This solitary bee flies around my garden taking nectar from Germander Speedwell. It can be tricky to catch buzzing around in the hot sunshine but I found this one as the sun was going down.

Dangling from a silk thread, I guess that this caterpillar was rather attached to the leaf it was eating.
